Overview of Flame-Retardant Research in the United States: The Basic vs. Applied Spectrum… and…Who Does/Should Support It?

Gary Wnek, Joseph F. Toot, Jr., Professor of Engineering and Professor and Chair of Macromolecular Science and Engineering at Case Western Reserve University.

Academic research ranges from curiosity-driven to external needs-driven, and many universities are known for a healthy balance across this spectrum. Turning attention to flame-retardant research, there is plenty of opportunity for longer-range, fundamental studies for example detailed on mechanistic understanding and development of new and sustainable additives, though very applied research intent on solving a specific practical problem in a relatively short time.
