PIN Flame Retardants - Mechanism, Application and Test Methods: An Introduction
April 22, 2026
11:30 to 12:30
Abstract
In a world where we are surrounded by various polymers, may it be expendables or sustainable parts of buildings, constructions or our transportation systems, the safety aspect of such plastics is no longer an option, but a requirement. Regulatory drives development and applications towards flame retardants with a reduced toxicological but improved sustainability profile. Phosphorous, Inorganic and Nitrogen-based Flame retardants PIN-FR) provide a wide range of solutions towards the demanding performance profile of flame retarded formulations, depending on the requirements and base resin. PIN-FR solutions may be applied in liquid resin composite applications, polyolefinic applications up to high performance polymer applications. The PIN-FR product groups with their performance profile will be introduced and the challenges for PIN-FR will be discussed. Finally, we will have a brief introduction to the specific test regimes for flame retarded polymer systems. The presentation can only be a brief overview of a complex topic which may be extended into a series of lectures with specific topics.
